The short answer

An AI sales agent is autonomous software that replaces the SDR loop: prospect discovery → message drafting → channel selection → send or task → reply triage. It runs from a single input — your ideal customer in a sentence — and produces the same output a human SDR would: real conversations in your inbox. The category emerged in 2024–2025 as LLMs became reliable enough to draft business outreach in a specific person's voice without sounding templated. As of June 2026, the leading agents target B2B SaaS founders running their own outbound (Overwise) and SDR teams of 10+ wanting to augment their reps (others).

What it actually does

The four jobs an AI sales agent owns.

Each one used to be a separate tool — a database, a copywriter, a sender, an inbox triage app. An AI sales agent collapses all four into one autonomous loop.

01

Finds verified leads.

Pulls from contact databases (Apollo-class), scrapes the open web (Google Maps, Instagram, business websites, hiring pages, funding pages), and runs absence-signal probes — checks that confirm a prospect lacks the thing you sell (no booking widget, no live chat, no online checkout). Verifies every email and phone number before handing the lead off.

02

Drafts in your voice.

Reads your sent folder (with your consent and OAuth scope), extracts your tone, sentence rhythm, and idiosyncratic phrasing, and drafts each first-touch message in that voice. Modern agents pair the draft with a cite-or-discard verifier — every factual claim in the message must trace to a real signal the agent scraped, or the draft is held back. Stops invented facts before they leave your domain.

03

Picks the channel per lead.

Not every prospect lives in your inbox. The agent routes email-strong leads to email, LinkedIn-active leads to a LinkedIn DM template, Instagram-native operators (creator economy, hospitality, padel courts) to IG replies, and phone-first verticals to a phone-call task. One lead, one best channel — chosen by reading the signals, not by your template default.

04

Triages replies.

Classifies every reply: positive (book a meeting), question (needs you), negative (suppress + analyze for pattern), out-of-office (re-queue), unsubscribe (hard suppress, all future campaigns). Only the ones that need a human reach your real inbox. Auto-suppression on "not interested" is a hard requirement, not a feature — it's GDPR Art. 21 in practice.

Synonyms, clarified

AI sales agent, AI SDR, AI BDR — same category.

AI SDR (Sales Development Representative)

The role label inherited from human sales orgs. Originally meant outbound-focused prospecting reps. AI SDR is now used interchangeably with AI sales agent, especially by the enterprise-targeted tools (11x, Artisan).

AI BDR (Business Development Representative)

Same as SDR in most companies; some firms split BDRs as inbound-leaning and SDRs as outbound-leaning. The AI versions do the same job: autonomous prospecting + outreach. The BDR/SDR distinction doesn't survive into the AI category.

AI sales agent

Category-neutral term. Doesn't presume a specific human role; covers the full prospect-to-reply loop including multi-channel routing (not just email like SDR/BDR implies). Used by Overwise and by analyst coverage (Gartner, Forrester) since mid-2025.

Autonomous outbound / Agentic outbound

Newer phrasings, same thing. "Agentic" emphasizes the decision-loop aspect (the software decides per lead, not just executes a fixed sequence). All four terms describe the same product category as of 2026.

How it differs from adjacent tools

Not the same as a database, a sender, or a spreadsheet.

The conflation usually goes one of three ways. Here's where the category lines actually sit.

  • Contact database (Apollo, ZoomInfo, Cognism) — a static dataset of contacts you query. Gives you the list. Doesn't decide who to contact, what to say, when, or via which channel. An AI sales agent uses a database as one input among many.
  • Cold-email sender (Instantly, Smartlead, Lemlist) — a delivery engine. Takes your list and your copy, ships it at scale with mailbox rotation and warmup. Doesn't find leads or write the copy. Pairs with an AI sales agent if you're at a scale where you've outgrown the agent's built-in send capacity.
  • Enrichment workflow tool (Clay) — a programmable spreadsheet that chains data providers, AI prompts, and senders into a custom pipeline you build. You assemble the system; an AI sales agent ships the assembled version. Same destination, different routes.
  • CRM with AI (HubSpot, Salesforce) — a record system with AI assist on the side. Stores your customer data, surfaces summaries, drafts replies on request. Doesn't run an autonomous outbound loop. CRMs and AI sales agents are complementary: most agents export to one.
Who an AI sales agent fits

Designed for the founder doing outbound — not for SDR teams of ten.

AI sales agents land best with a specific buyer: B2B SaaS founders running their own outbound, indie agencies or consultants doing founder-led sales, and 1–3 person early teams that aren't ready for a $90k SDR hire. The category was built around the math — one human SDR fully loaded costs more than 10 years of any AI sales agent on the market.

They land worst with SDR teams of 10+ (per-seat seqencers like Outreach and Salesloft fit better at that org shape) and with brands that win on inbound + content (an AI sales agent accelerates the wrong loop). They also don't replace human closing on calls — every agent we've seen, including ours, is a top-of-funnel tool.

Common questions, answered short.

Is an AI sales agent the same as an AI SDR?

Mostly yes. AI SDR (Sales Development Representative) and AI BDR (Business Development Representative) are the role labels carried over from human sales orgs. AI sales agent is the broader, category-neutral term used since 2024–2025. They describe the same software: autonomous prospecting + drafting + outreach, with a human reviewing replies. We use AI sales agent because the SDR/BDR terminology shrinks the scope to outbound email; the real category covers email, LinkedIn, IG, WhatsApp, and phone routing.

How is an AI sales agent different from a cold-email tool like Instantly or Smartlead?

An AI sales agent finds the lead, drafts the message, picks the channel, sends or queues a task, and triages the reply — the whole loop. A cold-email tool only does the send step. You bring the list, you write the templates, the cold-email tool delivers them at scale. Different jobs that often get conflated because both touch your inbox.

How is it different from a contact database like Apollo or ZoomInfo?

A contact database gives you the list and (sometimes) a basic sequencer. An AI sales agent uses that kind of data as one input — alongside live company signals, scraped websites, and absence-signal probes — to drive an autonomous outreach loop. Databases are static; an AI sales agent is the system that acts on the data.

How is it different from Clay?

Clay is a programmable spreadsheet for building enrichment workflows. An AI sales agent is the assembled, opinionated end product. With Clay you compose 5–8 components into a custom pipeline; with an AI sales agent you describe your ICP in a sentence and the assembled pipeline runs. Clay's ceiling is higher; an AI sales agent's floor is lower.

Do I lose control if an AI is sending under my name?

Only if the design is wrong. A responsible AI sales agent runs in three modes — autopilot (it sends), task (it drafts, you click send), or export-only (it just hands you the list). Switch per campaign. Every draft is reviewable; every decision should be inspectable. The trust premise of 'AI under my name' only works when you can audit each choice and pull the override at any time.

How much does an AI sales agent cost?

Most cost $99–$599/month flat, versus $90,000+ fully loaded for one human SDR (US base + benefits + tooling). Overwise: Starter $99, Growth $249, Founder Team $599 — flat, unlimited team, no per-seat tax, no LLM-token passthrough. The math favors the AI for any team under 4–5 humans; above that it's a hybrid play.

Is the outbound an AI sales agent does GDPR-compliant?

It can be, when (a) the data source is lawful (public business contacts under Art. 6(1)(f) legitimate interest), (b) the Art. 13/14 transparency notice is included in the first message, (c) a one-click unsubscribe is offered and honored. Plus, since August 2026, EU AI Act Art. 50 requires AI-assisted messages to be disclosed. Overwise enforces all four by default; tools that send raw cold without these are not compliant.

Who should use an AI sales agent — and who shouldn't?

Use one if you are: a B2B SaaS founder doing your own outbound, a 1–3 person founder team without an SDR hire, an indie agency or consultant running founder-led sales. Don't if you are: a brand that depends on inbound + content (it's the wrong tool), an SDR team of 10+ where seat-based sequencers fit better, or a company in a category where every prospect must be touched by a specific human (e.g. enterprise relationship sales).
